Managing relationship problems
Whatever stage of life we are in, we can all have challenges in our relationships – especially with a partner or spouse.
No matter how serious the issue is, it can have an impact our on stress levels, our mental wellbeing and our ability to perform at work.
What can you do if you are going through a rough patch in your relationship and where can you seek assistance?
Tips for managing relationship difficulties
-
Talk to your partner – communication issues in relationships are often at the heart of breakdown. Suffice to say it is a key part of helping to resolve any issues you may have. It is important to take the time in a quiet setting without interruptions to listen to what each other has to say and to try and understand where the other person is coming from. Be clear with how you are feeling and with what your needs are.
-
Consider counselling – if you feel you aren’t getting anywhere with just the two of you conversing, counselling for relationship issues may assist. A professional counsellor will help to facilitate communication between you both and provide advice on the pathway ahead.
-
Chat with family or friends – talking to friends or family members may support you in dealing with your challenges. Sometimes just getting things off your chest can lighten the mental load and help you find a way forward.
-
Get support at work – While it may feel awkward, telling your manager or a trusted colleague that you are going through a difficult time will give you more support at work. You don’t need to go into detail about what your difficulties are – just that you have a few things that you are dealing with. Many employers offer EAP (employee assistance programmes) where you have access to free counselling sessions, so it can be good to take these up if needed.
-
Look after yourself - relationship issues can take their toll on our wellbeing so it’s important to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Take yourself off for a walk and/or make sure you continue to participate in any activities that make you happy.
